Your child is asleep. Your dog is resting beside the sofa. Would you like to reduce mosquitoes without adding sudden zapping sounds to the room?
When choosing a mosquito trap, it is easy to focus on bright lights, powerful-sounding claims or the insects in a collection tray. For a home with children and pets, another question matters: How well will this appliance fit everyday family life?
Black Hole and Black Hole Plus use a fan to draw insects into a collection chamber instead of killing them on a high-voltage grid. That means no electrical zapping sound or burnt-insect smell from electrocution. The fan still makes noise, and correct placement remains essential.

Suction traps and electric zappers: what changes?
An electric zapper kills insects when they touch its high-voltage grid. A suction trap draws insects into a chamber with airflow. This difference affects capture sounds, maintenance and the precautions needed around the appliance.
| Before you buy | Suction trap | Electric zapper |
|---|---|---|
| Capture method | Fan draws insects into a chamber | High-voltage grid electrocutes insects on contact |
| Capture sounds | No zapping; fan noise remains | May produce intermittent zapping sounds |
| Burnt-insect smell | No electrocution, so no burning smell from that process | May occur when insects are electrocuted |
| Precautions | Still has electricity, a lamp and moving parts | Prevent access to the electric grid as directed in the manual |
If avoiding sudden zaps and the smell associated with electrocution matters to your household, suction capture offers a clear advantage in those respects. The word “suction” alone does not prove that a trap catches more mosquitoes than every zapper.
Loud zaps do not necessarily mean fewer mosquito bites
A sharp zap gives immediate feedback. It can feel reassuring because we hear something happening. But insects killed are not necessarily the mosquitoes that bite people. Judge a trap by suitable placement and actual results, rather than by the loudest sound.
NC State Extension explains that outdoor bug zappers do not effectively reduce or eliminate mosquito populations, and that attracting mosquitoes to a trap is not the same as controlling them across an area. This is general guidance, not a test or endorsement showing that Black Hole outperforms competing products. [1]
Why consider suction capture around children and pets?
1. No insect-killing electric grid
Both Black Hole models capture through suction and containment. Their capture mechanism therefore avoids the particular hazard of contact with an insect-zapping grid. They remain electrical appliances: place them where children cannot reach them and pets cannot knock them over, pull the cord or play with them.
2. Capture without insecticide spraying
Airflow capture is an option for households looking to reduce indoor spraying. Many electric zappers also operate without sprays, so this is a benefit of physical capture, rather than an exclusive advantage of suction traps.
3. No sudden electrical zaps during rest time
When a child has just fallen asleep or a pet is resting, avoiding intermittent zapping may make the room more comfortable. Choose a position where the fan sound does not disturb anyone.
No zapping does not mean risk-free. Keep children and pets from playing with the appliance. Never insert fingers or objects, or stare at the UVA lamp at close range. Keep it away from water, secure the cord and unplug before cleaning. Always follow the manual for your model.
Black Hole or Black Hole Plus? Start with your routine
The most expensive option is not automatically the best choice. A useful purchase fits your space and is one you will operate consistently. Both models use suction and containment. The practical question is: Would you prefer manual on/off control, or help from a light sensor? [2]
Black Hole: a lower starting cost with manual control
If switching the appliance on and off already fits your routine, the standard model lets you start with a smaller budget. Choose features you will actually use.
Black Hole Plus: one less thing to remember
The Plus model offers a light-sensor mode that switches on in darkness and off when light returns. This can reduce the need to remember switching according to room lighting. The sensor detects light, not mosquitoes, and does not automatically make the Plus more effective at catching mosquitoes.
Prices checked on 28 October 2026 were THB 2,290 for Black Hole and THB 2,990 for Black Hole Plus: a difference of THB 700. Is light-sensor convenience worth that difference for your household? If not, the standard model is a straightforward choice. Refer to the product cards and checkout for current prices.
Plan how you will use it from day one
- Choose a location: a stable indoor spot out of reach of children and pets, away from people and strong airflow, following the model’s instructions.
- Set a routine: follow the recommended operating periods and rest intervals in the manual. With Plus, select a mode suited to the room’s lighting.
- Clean and observe: unplug before maintenance. Monitor catches and mosquitoes in the room; do not expect one session to remove every mosquito from your home.
- Address breeding and entry points: remove standing water, repair screens and close gaps. A trap supplements these measures; it does not replace bite prevention or protection against mosquito-borne disease.
A comfortable home does not need a loud zap as proof that something is working. If suction capture suits your priorities, choose the model that fits your routine and install it correctly.
